U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Tuesday called for the international organization to hold multiple emergency sessions as protests continued in Iran for the sixth day.“The U.N. must speak out,” Haley said at a press conference. “In the days ahead, we will be calling for an emergency session both here in New York and at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. We must not be silent.
The people of Iran are crying out for freedom.”
Protests in Iran started late last week over frustration with Iran’s sluggish economy, but have since grown into far-reaching, open defiance of the country's leadership.
So far, at least 21 people have been killed in the protests.The Trump administration has come out in support of the protesters, including the president himself, who tweeted on the matter.
“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime. All of the money that President Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their ‘pockets,’ " Trump tweeted Tuesday.
“The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The U.S. is watching!”
Haley framed the response as a contrast to the international community’s response to the 2009 protests in Iran, and said the world must respond better to these protests.
“All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause,” she said. “The international community made the mistake of failing to that in 2009, we must not make that mistake again.”
Asked for more specificity on what meetings in New York the United States will call for, Haley said there will be conversations with the Security Council on what to do.
“One way or the other, we will have a meeting on what is happening Iran with the protests and their fight for freedom,” she said.
Haley also said there are no plans for unilateral U.S. action “at this time.”
In response to Iran shutting down access to social media, Haley also read several slogans from protestors, including “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life only for Iran,” “Let go of Syria, think of us,” and “We will die, but will take Iran back.”
“Those are not my words,” she said. “Those are not the words of the United States. Those are the words of the brave people of Iran.”
