5 September 2017-- Barnet MPs leant their support to a cross section of MPs and political names at a rally in Trafalgar Square.
Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet and Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon, leant their support toAnglo-Iranian communities from across the county and other cross-party MPs to call on the government to fight for an indepedent committee to investigate mass executions in Iran in 1988.
Around 30,000 political prisoners were killed under the regime in Iran at that time and Saturday's rally called on officials to raise the issue in the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly and UN Human Rights session later in the month.
Family members of those who were killed in the massacre also delivered a letter to 10 Downing Street to raise this issue.
A message shared at the rally from Mr Offord, who was unable to attend, said: 'I stand with you in solidarity with political prisoners and human rights activists on hunger strike in protest against the inhumane conditions in prisons and systematic repression in Iran.
'The international community can no longer turn a blind eye to the issue of decades-long impunity as it is reminded by the recent repressive measures against defenceless political prisoners in Ghohardast prison, which forced them to go on hunger strike to demand their legitimate rights and resist repression.'
The President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran ( NCRI ), Maryam Rajavi , said: 'I urge the people of Europe to question their governments about their continued relations with a regime whose rule relies on genocide.
'We urge the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to form an independent inquiry committee to investigate the 1988 massacre.”
Ms Villiers also vowed her continuing support to the British Iranians in Barnet and to call on the government for the establishment of a committee.
