IRAN REJECTS US CALL TO OPEN BASES TO NUCLEAR INSPECTORS

BY JOSH DELK - 08/29/17 03:54 PM EDT
Iran is rejecting a U.S. request to allow United Nations inspectors access to its military bases, calling the proposal “merely a dream,” Reuters reports.
“Iran’s military sites are off limits ... All information about these sites are classified,” said government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht on a weekly state television broadcast, according to the report.
“Iran will never allow such visits. Don’t pay attention to such remarks that are only a dream.”
U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley last week urged the International Atomic Energy Agency to seek access to Iran’s military sites to ensure Tehran is not covering up any nuclear weapons work.
Under the nuclear deal, Iran vowed to suspend its nuclear weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief. The deal also allows the IAEA to inspect Iranian facilities if they suspect illegal nuclear activity.
"The Americans will take their dream of visiting our military and sensitive sites to their graves...It will never happen," a top advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Reuters.
President Trump railed against the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by former President Barack Obama on the campaign trail, calling it a bad deal. But his administration has re-certified that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal in April.
Trump, though, has also promised new sanctions outside of the agreement to hit Iran for its support of Syrian leader Bashar Assad and terrorist groups.
The State Department must re-certify Iran as compliant with the nuclear deal every 90 days, with the next deadline coming in October.
